WHY PICK GEOGRAPHY?The transition from Year 9 to Year 10 is a very important one and you will be asked to make several decisions about what subjects you want to continue to study. It is important that you are well informed about your choices and think them through carefully.
Geography will help you to become more aware of the everyday situations faced by not only the people who live around you, but also those across the world. Geography is an incredibly dynamic subject changing on a daily basis as world events unfold. Geography will help you to understand current affairs and develop your own educated opinions. Geography will help you to become a conscientious global citizen. As well as setting you up for a successful career in a range of fields. Geography encourages you to work independently and gain the skills necessary to further your knowledge and understanding of the world and how people interact with it. Geography is becoming an increasingly popular and well respected subject. It is now one of the most popular optional IGCSE subjects in International Schools around the world and has one of the highest rates of graduate employability. WHAT EXAMS WILL I SIT?At the end of the course in Year 11 you will sit three geography exams. These will assess your knowledge and understanding, your data handling skills, your map skills and your ability to apply this knowledge to real life situations.
PAPER 1: You will be given six questions and will be required to answer three of these. There will be two questions on each of the themes we will study (human geography, physical geography, economic geography). These will include resource-based questions, problem-solving and case study questions. (1 hour 45 minutes) 45% of total mark PAPER 2: This paper will assess your ability to interpret and analyse geographical information. There will be one question which will assess your map skills using a 1:25 000 or 1:50 000 topographical map. (1 hour 30 minutes) 27.5% of total mark PAPER 4: This paper is the alternative to fieldwork. You will be assessed on your knowledge of data collection techniques which may be use in the field. There will also be questions which assess your ability to present data and analyse data to draw conclusions. (1 hour 30 minutes) 27.5% of total mark You will sit a series of 'mini tests' throughout the course to check your understanding of each topic after we have covered it in class. These assessments will include the same style of question as exams which you will sit at the end of Year 11. However, these tests will not count towards your GCSE and will be used by your teacher to check your progress. |
